| Fort Mulligan Day Festival |
5/22/10 to 5/22/10 |
|
Civil War Earthern Fort Experience a part of West Virginia’s Civil War history
The valley of the South Branch of the Potomac River saw an incredible amount of troop activity and action during the Civil War. Its story is hauntingly similar to that of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, albeit on a smaller scale. The fort as it exists today was constructed in 1863 by troops under the command of Col. James A. Mulligan, from Chicago, Ill. Infantry, cavalry and artillery from West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Illinois carried out the backbreaking labor.
Today, Fort Mulligan remains one of the best preserved earthern forts. Join the Civil War Trust, family and friends for a day that will include Union and Confederate living history camps, weapons and surgical demos, presentations and period tradesman, ladies’ tea, a candle light camp tour and more. Plenty of great food will be available, including mulligan stew prepared over an open fire. Join a reenactment that will place you in days past and improve your knowledge of the struggles and triumphs of Civil War troops in West Virginia's Civil War history.
Proceeds go toward Fort Mulligans preservation.

| The New Federal Health Legislation: Highlights and Shortcomings |
5/26/10 to 5/26/10 |
|
Confused About the New Health Legislation?
According to a recent poll by the nonprofit Kaiser Family Foundation, the public is evenly split between support and opposition of the recently adopted national health legislation. Some Americans were pleased, others angry, but mostly they were confused.
A forum to reduce the confusion will be held Wednesday, May 26 at 7:00 PM in the Bryd Center for Legislative Studies on the campus of Shepherd University in Shepherdstown. Perry Bryant, Executive Director of West Virginians for Affordable Health Care, will present an overview and highlights of the act. Dr. David Baltierra, Program Director of the WVU Rural Family Medicine Residency in Harpers Ferry and a member of Physicians for a National Health Program, will talk about the new law’s limitations. Members of the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions.
"The forum is part of a public education campaign. Our goal is to provide solid, objective information about the act. What it does. What it doesn't do," agreed Bryant and Baltierra.
The program, which is free and open to the public, is cosponsored by the Eastern Panhandle Free Clinic, Eastern Panhandle Single-Payer Action Network, Jefferson County Chapter of the NAACP, League of Women Voters of Jefferson County, and the National Association of Social Workers West Virginia Chapter.
